“…when they estimated that the project would take between a month to a month and a half, I was sure that it would be more like two months.
You can imagine my surprise when I got the keys only after a month and three days, without going over the estimated budget!” (Home owner in Ramat-Eshkol, Jerusalem).
Dvir & Chanie
first met in Jerusalem and after a short period got married. One of
their first major projects was to renovate the apartment they bought
as newlyweds. All their friends and family suggested that they handle
the renovations on their own and, as they had some previous experience,
they decided it would be a good idea.
They had an architect prepare plans and got cost estimates from various contractors. In the end the choice was based on good chemistry and the good impression from sample jobs of the contractor.
Unfortunately after a few short weeks the honey-moon was over and the arguments with the contractor began. The contractor requested additional money to pay for changes, many of which were unneeded or unexplainable. Chanie & Dvir understood at that point they had no choice but to give in to his demands, specifically because of the fear that he would abandon them in mid-project (a threat that he had actually vocalized). So the work continued but with an atmosphere of stress, mishaps and distrust.
After the ground work for electricity, water and flooring was put in the couple finally started seeing the light at the end of the tunnel (or so they thought).
Against the terms of the contract, the contractor demanded that most
of the last payment be made at that point in order to finish the job,
or that their other option was to be left living in a "battlefield".
Once again, feeling helpless, Chanie & Dvir transferred money to the
contractor, a sum which constituted a large percentage of the final
payment.
After two days of work the contractor disappeared!!!! Never to be heard
from again. Dvir & Chanie were under the assumption that their friends'
and family's previous experience was enough to go on for a "do it yourself" renovation.
Unfortunately they were proved wrong. After tormenting themselves with
regrets that they did not use a professional company that would have
helped them avoid all the problems, waste of money and time, they decided
to open "TurnKey" so that no one will ever have to feel those regrets
themselves.
